Top 5… Films from 2010

I was struggling for ideas this week for a top 5 list so I let one of my favourite podcasts Filmspotting inspire me. They regularly do top 5 lists and they started listing their top 5 from every year before they started. So as I have already done my Top 5 from 2011, here are my top 5 from 2010…

5. Toy Story 3

The end of an era and the completion of probably the only perfect trilogy ever made. I laughed, I cried and I stood amazed at how Pixar continue to create classics. It’s not my favourite Pixar ever but it is up there with the best.

4. How to Train Your Dragon

It was a tough call between this and Toy Story 3 and as much as I enjoyed the final part of the Toy Story trilogy it was How to Train Your Dragon that I liked more and has left a greater impression on me. I was on the edge of my seat throughout laughing, smiling and thoroughly enjoying myself!

3. The Social Network

Only David Fincher could have taken the story of the start of Facebook and made it into a riveting and amazing film. The stars are all perfect but it is really the score from Trent Reznor that lifts this film near the top of Fincher’s canon.

2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World

I was put off watching this film until only recently and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in ages. I think you really need to be a geek and understand gaming and comic book culture to truly love this but I did. I really did not want this film to end and that is rare for me.

1. Inception

There was really only one contender for the top spot here. Inception will go down in history as one of the greatest films ever made. In decades time it will sit alongside other classics with pride. It is a testament to the amazing directing and writing that I can watch this film over and over again and still find new things and be thoroughly gripped. Nolan is unstoppable.

Honourable Mentions

  • 127 Hours – You know what is coming but it doesn’t make it any less gripping.
  • Easy-A – A fun high-school comedy with my favourite young actress Emma Stone
  • Book of Eli – I thought I would hate this but it surprised me and was lots of fun!
  • Blue Valentine – A heartbreaking view on a marriage as it falls apart.
