Top 5… Films from 2008

Last week I listed my top 5 films from 2009. This week it is 2008’s turn!

5. The Hurt Locker

Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar winning war film follows a team of bomb disposal experts in Iraq  as they learn to work together under extreme circumstances. Heading up the team is Jeremy Renner who plays the man in the suit who actually has to disarm the devices. This film is tense, very well acted and thrilling to the end.

4. Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle does the impossible with this film and makes a tale of orphaned troublemakers in India funny, touching, horrific, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. It seems that no matter what genre Boyle touches he succeeds in. The brilliant soundtrack also helps!

3. Wall-E

I’ll admit it, the first 20 minutes of this film had me welling up. The sight of this one surviving robot wandering around the wasteland of the Earth was heart aching. It loses a little of it’s charm when it takes a trip into space but it is still a mesmerising and classic Pixar film.

2. Let the Right One In

Before watching this I was told to not find anything out about it. This makes it hard to explain why the film is number 2 in my list. All I can say is it is Swedish and revolves around a boy who strikes up a friendship with a girl who moves in next door. But there is more going on than you would believe, lots of blood and snow and a totally amazing film. Go watch it.

1. The Dark Knight

The film of 2008 has to be Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece and the best superhero film ever made. Batman Begins was good, The Dark Knight is amazing. There is so much to praise in this film not to mention Heath Ledger’s towering performance as the Joker. Nolan just keeps getting better and better and that’s why The Dark Knight Rises is my second most anticipated film of 2012.

Honourable Mentions

  • Taken – Liam Neeson destroys Paris in pursuit of his kidnapped daughter.
  • Gran Torino – Eastwood stars in and directs this modern classic.
  • In Bruges – There are plenty of F-bombs in this hilarious gangster comedy.
  • Cloverfield – Shaky cam at its best. Short, intense and very, very good.
