Top 5… Christopher Nolan movies

With the exception of his debut Following, I have seen every one of Christopher Nolan’s eight movies and I think he is one of the most consistent directors working today. Now that I have seen The Dark Knight Rises I can perform my rundown of his top 5 films.

5. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Just making its way into the top 5, this is an amazing film and testament to the quality of the director that it is one of his worst films. Solid and entertaining but lacking the higher level of intelligence that most of his other films exhibit. My full review for this should be on the site on Wednesday.

4. The Prestige (2006)

A film that rewards with more and more every time you see it. The first time I saw it I was disappointed but on second viewing I realised how amazing it really was. Sparring magicians have never been as much fun.

3. Inception (2012)

Arguably Nolan’s most intelligent film and the riskiest for the box office but the audiences came and saw and saw again as Nolan masterfully messes with our minds in this dream within a dream within a dream masterpiece.

2. The Dark Knight (2008)

Two words: Heath Ledger. Without him this film may never have worked. His turn as the psychotic Joker is incredible and takes the Batman franchise to a new level. Such an amazing film that deserves to be seen by everyone.

1. Memento (2000)

Back where it all started. Nolan kicked off his mainstream career with a film that totally messes with the usual time structure narrative and amazingly pulls it off. The time jumping gimmick not only works, but it heightens the story and allows the audience to experience the memory loss that it’s main protagonist suffers from. If you haven’t seen this yet then you owe yourself to see it now.
