Cinema reviews – Slasher flicks and exploding ships

This week I caught up with the new Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard collaboration Cabin in the Woods and the latest bored game adaptation Battleship.

The Cabin in the Woods

It’s hard to review a film when the less you know about it before you go and see it the better. The very basic premise is 5 college kids go to a cabin in the woods for a break but of course it doesn’t exactly pan out as they had planned!

That’s it. That’s all I’m going to say. If you like slasher horror films, go se this. If you like clichéd horror, go see this. If you can’t stand modern slasher and clichéd horror films, go se this. If you have loved anything that Joss Whedon has done before (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse), go see this.

Intelligent entertainment.

There are some aliens. There are some battleships. There are some really wooden characters and plot holes you can float an aircraft carrier through. But if you enjoy stuff exploding and really silly action you may just enjoy the 2 hours this film takes up. I did.

It’s pretty bad but it is fun. The important thing was the director Peter Berg clearly knew what he was creating and had enormous fun doing it. Unlike the recent Wrath of the Titans which I think took itself a little too seriously!

Dumb fun.
