Setanta Sucks

August 12th 2008

Back in the good old days you used to be able to subscribe to Sky Sports and Premiership Plus (only an extra £50) and get all the live premiership and Champions League games live on your TV. Now however I have to miss lots of live games because of silly Setanta Sports who want to charge me £13 a month which very quickly adds up to over twice as much as Sky were charging.

I do watch a fair bit of live but not every game. But it tends to be that the game I want to watch is always on Setanta Sports (How many people were annoyed on Sunday because the Community Shield wasn’t on normal Sky?)

I have to try and look at the bright side though. It will save me £50 which will help a lot with all the price rises going on and it will give me more time to do more important stuff than watching .

Roll on the start of the season though. Come on Spurs!!

What is hell?

August 6th 2008

My friend Lindsay has just posted a very interesting bible study on based on Ezekiel 18:32. She was talking about who goes to and why but it got me thinking about what is ?

I have always wondered about . My biblical knowledge isn’t exactly extensive but I don’t recall it ever being mentioned in the old testament anywhere. Nor heaven for that matter although this could be implied with the various people who got taken up to be with God.

With the coming of a new covenant was established and the “modern” ideas of heaven and were formed. Does this mean they didn’t exist before then? I don’t think so. So either there has always been a and God happily sent all his followers there without warning or is not exactly what we think it is.

I’m sure there are some passages in Revelation that explain that is a fiery and unpleasant place (understatement) but lets have a wander into theory for a second… I’ve always considered the fact that maybe is just the absence of God. Maybe is what I used to think of as death when I was an atheist: nothing. An eternity of darkness and nothingness without God.

This makes the whole resurrection thing make more sense in my head as coming back to life to live at God’s side doesn’t mean anything if you have to die to be in heaven. If death is death and you can only get to heaven by being alive again through resurrection then it makes more sense to me. In order to get to a fiery place called would mean having to be resurrected as well surely?

Now I’m sure I am very wrong in all of this and that there are lots of biblical verses to tell me as much. I think I need to go away and do a bit more research to learn more!

However the important thing is not what is, it is that there is one. If this is the case then it makes sense to me to find out what I need to do to not go there! I believe that this is a fairly simple job and can be done by just believing that was the son of God and that he died in order to forgive my sins and give me a clean slate before God.

if you are anything like me though then you’ll want to know as much as possible before you start believing something. Especially something with such a negative image like it has today!

I advise everyone who is not already a Christian to do a little bit of research on what could be the most important decision in your life. If what happened 2000 years ago on a cross was for real (and I have come to the conclusion it was based on lots of compelling historical evidence) you owe it yourselves to discard whatever preconceptions you have about religion and try and find out a little more.

One way to do this is through books but the easier way is through an Alpha course. This is a 13 week course that goes through the basics of Christianity. I went on it when I was still an atheist and it is a great course as they don’t preach at you and try and convert you. They let you be as stubborn and negative as you want. They are only interested in giving everyone a chance to make up their own mind.

My church is running a course at the end of September. More details will be coming soon but in the meantime if you are in the Swindon area and interested in finding out more let them know. I’ll put up another post in the near future as the details become available.

For those of you not in the Swindon area then don’t worry as there are Alpha courses running all over the country. Have a look at http://uk.alpha.org/findacourse to find your nearest event.

A cinematic sacrifice

August 4th 2008

Last week I cancelled my subscription to Total Film magazine and just now I cancelled my Cineworld Unlimited card. Here are the main reasons I have done it:

  • Money – £165 a year in fact!
  • Time – I don’t go to the cinema as much as I used to and I have more important things that I should be doing
  • Films aren’t on – The films I really want to see just aren’t on at our cinema: There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It makes more sense for me to rent them and watch them at home!
  • DVDs – I have 100s of DVDs at home that I don’t have time to watch as it is!

I’m also taking a break from films for a while to spend more time with God and on more important things. We’ll have to see where I stand with in my life after this.

This does of course mean no more reviews for a while. Sorry!

Perfect for a Post-It note or three

August 1st 2008

Over the past couple of weeks I have been listening to some sermons and a couple of statements that were made have really jumped out and stuck with me…

The first was from Mark Driscoll when he was talking about how as Christians we are called to serve but we need to check our attitudes to why we serve:

We shouldn’t do things for God because we have to, we should do them because we get to!

I enjoy and helping people but I still look at it as something I am called to do by God when really I should look at it as something I get to do for God. Looking at it in that slightly different way makes the things I do more of a pleasure and less of a chore.

The second quote was from and he was talking about what is. He gave a fantastic (biblical) definition based on Hebrews 11:

is confidence that God is who he says he is and he’ll do what he has promised to do

is not a power that we get and can grow in. It’s not the biblical version of the Force! It is simply believing in God and trusting that he will fulfill the promises he has made.

And finally this was attached to the bottom of an email I got sent the other week and went straight onto a Post-It note on my wall:

Happy moments – Praise God
Difficult moments – Seek God
Quiet moments – Worship God
Painful moments – Trust God
Every moment – Thank God

This stayed with me from the moment I read it as it is basically a very accurate guide to how to live your life!
