Top 5… Westerns

I used to hate the genre but I have come to love a good western. Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the little known (at least to me) John Wayne western called Chisum. So I thought this would be a good time to list my top 5 from the wild west.

An A-Z of movies

I’ve happily managed top see three films since my last review so rather than write a post for each I thought I’d sum them all up here.

Cinema review–Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

When I left the cinema having watched the fourth instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise I’m glad nobody asked me what I thought because I honestly couldn’t say. I felt like I hadn’t enjoyed it even though I clearly remember thinking it was excellent. It dawned on me a few days later what had happened. The film was like a bell curve; it started well and the central set-piece in Dubai was as amazing as people had said it was. However, as the film neared its conclusion is totally ran out of steam and by the end I had forgotten how good the first 90 minutes were and was left disappointed by the lame last 30.

Cinema review–The girl with the dragon tattoo

I always want to be more literary than I am but sadly my reading speed means I barely get through 6 books in a year (I’ve been trawling through Cloud Atlas since October). However, a few years ago my friend passed onto me the Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy which starts with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I was gripped by the series and was pleased with the news that Fincher (one of my favourite directors) would be directing the English language adaptation.

How to take perfect meeting notes

There’s a trick to taking notes from meetings I learnt a few years ago and have lived by and loved ever since. I thought I’d pass on the technique to anyone who is looking for a way to improve their note taking abilities.

The basic principle is that rather than just scribbling notes down on a page and having to trawl back through them blindly later, you start each new note with a symbol that indicates the type of note it is. I use five types of symbol which I will go through here.

Top 5… Most anticipated films of 2012

So, last week I covered my favourite films of 2011 but what about the treasure trove of movies that are coming out in 2012? It’s impossible to tell what will be amazing and what will be rubbish but based on trailers, early buzz and directors here are my most anticipated films of 2012.

Cinema Review–Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

When the first Sherlock Holmes movie came out at Christmas 2009 I wasn’t overly fussed to go and see it. As such I missed it on the big screen and eventually caught up with it over a year later. All I can say is I totally loved it.

Now the time has come for the inevitable sequel. How does it compare?

Minecraft – the end of my life as I know it

Over the Christmas holidays I had spent some time relaxing by playing a few computer games. I managed to get through Portal, Left 4 Dead, Serious Sam and Max Payne but these are all action games. I really wanted a slower paced strategy game where I could build a city or a nation. I wanted to have it on in the background, while I did other things. I had searched for days for a suitable game and came up with nothing.

Then, I stumbled upon the PC Gamer website and wondered what their highest rated games were. That’s when I saw it. The game I had heard a lot of buzz about recently called Minecraft had been given 96%. That’s a phenomenal score so I read the review and was intrigued. I then watched a tutorial video for the game on YouTube and was hooked. I knew I had to buy it…

The next day around lunchtime I caved in and bought it. I downloaded it, installed it and seven hours later I realised I hadn’t moved. Minecraft has taken over my life!

Top 5… Movies I saw from 2011

Every week I’m going to the try to post up a “Top 5” movie related list. What better way to kick this off than with my top 5 films from 2011 (that I saw).

There’ll be some really amazing films that I missed so can’t comment on, but on the ones I actually caught here are my favourites.

Hello 2012… I’m back!

About six months ago my web host deleted a database on my server, essentially wiping out the website that I had grown with articles for two years. I can’t be cross with them though as I’m the one that didn’t make backups.

Then, two months ago I decided to take a break from social media. It was a tough time for Facebook and Twitter without my inane wittering but somehow they have survived.

Now it is the start of 2012 and a perfect time to make a comeback!

So, what is my purpose for this website?
